Accounting for industrial CDR: getting the rules right
Rethinking Removals
(GMT+3)
Industrial companies could generate millions of tonnes of carbon removal as part of their operations. It is technically straightforward to implement and operate across a wide range of sectors. It builds on tested strategies: using waste as a resource, expanding existing practices to optimise carbon sequestration, or capturing and storing biogenic emissions. And it could shift removals from being a cost into a source of value.
But industrial removals do not yet show up in carbon accounting standards and therefore companies can’t make a business case for investment.
What is needed to change that?
Key Topics:
- How are companies trying to integrate removals into their processes?
- How does this fit into broader industrial decarbonisation strategies?
- How can removals best be integrated into upcoming product and corporate carbon accounting standards?
- What role can governments play in supporting industrial removals?
