From Rock, Steel and Waste: Türkiye’s Industrial Pathways to Carbon Removal
Life Climate (Life İklim ve Enerji Ltd. Şti.)
This session brings together three complementary, Türkiye-based pathways to durable carbon removal and utilisation — each one past the concept stage and into real engineering and field deployment — and connects them to measurement, crediting and finance. Rather than championing a single technology, it shows how an industrialising economy can assemble a diverse negative-emissions portfolio across rock, steel and waste.
Industrial carbon capture & utilisation (İÇDAŞ). Capturing CO₂ from steel rolling-mill flue gas and mineralising it with steel slag — itself a steel by-product — to produce precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) for the paper and pharmaceutical industries. A TENMAK-supported R&D project with İstanbul Technical University and MATİL A.Ş.
Enhanced Rock Weathering (Aldur Madencilik). Applying finely ground basalt to agricultural soils to draw down atmospheric CO₂ as stable bicarbonate, while improving soil health, pH and crop yield.
Biochar from waste (BKC Makina). Drying and pyrolysing municipal and industrial sewage sludge — using the process’s own waste heat, with no added energy — into biochar and energy, turning a costly waste burden into durable carbon and quantifiable carbon-credit gains.
