190,000 jobs in Germany
Thanks to its technological strength, its industrial base and an ambitious climate policy, Germany has the opportunity to play a key role in the global CDR market. The consistent expansion of this industry could generate annual turnover of up to 70 billion euro and promote sustainable economic growth.
At the same time, the CDR industry could create up to 190,000 jobs in Germany by 2050. Research institutions, start-ups and established companies in mechanical and plant engineering are key players in this transformation process.
In addition to new employment opportunities, various industries will benefit from this development. Mechanical engineering, manufacturing, the energy sector and digital services in particular can benefit from additional market opportunities and investments.
The consistent expansion of the CDR industry could create up to 190,000 jobs in contributing sectors in Germany, thereby exceeding current employment levels in the wind energy industry.
Europe and Germany as catalysts
Global CDR-induced economic potential could rise rapidly in scenarios compatible with a temperature increase of less than 2°C or 1.5°C, reaching between 470 and 940 billion euro in 2050.
Investment
Under a 1.5°C-compatible removal pathway, the CDR industry could contribute around 2% of Germany’s current GDP – by comparison, the automotive sector currently contributes around 4.5%.
Investments of 5.7 billion euro are needed by 2030 – less than 1% of the total funds earmarked for the “green transformation”. A large part of these funds will go towards developing future energy, transport and storage infrastructures to ensure long-term competitiveness.
