From Negotiation to Action: Building Credible Carbon Markets to unlock the potential of Africa’s Carbon Sinks

(GMT+3)

The session will demonstrate how the German funded project, "Unlocking the Potential of Carbon Sinks in Africa“, will support the market ramp-up of CDR in Africa. Against this backdrop, a panel discussion will shed light on what is needed to developing and scaling high-integrity carbon removal activities under Article 6 and what are persistent (and sometimes overlooked) challenges. The focus of the panel discussion will lie on the perspectives of representatives from government and private sector of selected African countries.

The session will explore how Article 6, including the Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism (PACM), can help create the enabling conditions and demand signals needed to scale high-integrity carbon removals in Africa. It will examine practical questions around methodologies and MRV, host-country frameworks, safeguards and benefit sharing, project preparation and access to finance, drawing on emerging experience from African partner countries.

The session will highlight how Germany is supporting partner countries in developing the policy frameworks, methodologies and project pipelines needed to enable high-integrity nature-based and novel CDR, including their potential use under Article 6.
