Harnessing Ocean Solutions: researching marine carbon dioxide removal across coastal regions, communities, and fisheries
Ocean climate solutions are increasingly being explored to assess if techniques such as marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) can help address the CDR gap. While on-going research suggests that mCDR techniques offer the promise of long-term durable storage, they face unique challenges and opportunities: filling social license and research gaps are critical to move the field toward national policy acceptance. Each of the panelists will highlight important tools for doing so: community-informed research to assess environmental impacts; global initiatives to link research teams across geographies and fill key gaps in knowledge; critical advancements across multilateral governance that create legitimacy and drive political will; and bottom up process to develop regional frameworks that reflect the priorities of governments in key regions. These perspectives will be framed by government leadership at the national level to pioneer dedicated mCDR governance and enabling policies.
This panel will provide key perspectives for policymakers and civil society looking to support advancements at the science-policy-societal interface, such as: 1) how mCDR might eventually be reflected in future climate and market policies; 2) how can emerging research be designed to reflect climate, environmental and social priorities.
