Unlocking corporate demand for nature and carbon removal
Carbon dioxide removal is an essential part of the pathway to net zero, yet translating corporate climate ambition into procurement remains challenging. Companies must decide how much to buy, how to finance purchases, which removal pathways to support, and how to secure internal approval while standards, prices and supply continue to evolve.
Nature-based solutions have an important role to play in this transition. They can deliver atmospheric carbon removals alongside benefits for biodiversity, ecosystems and local communities, while presenting distinct challenges around measurement, durability and reversal risk. Engineered removals bring different characteristics and constraints. Corporate buyers must understand these differences and determine how the pathways can contribute to their climate strategies over time.
Drawing on WBCSD and Climeworks’ new CDR report, this session will explore what helps companies move from interest in carbon removal to their first purchase, and from initial pilots to sustained demand.
Through a moderated discussion with corporate buyers and experts, the session will examine how businesses make procurement decisions, how nature-related outcomes influence portfolio choices, and what changes in policy, finance and market infrastructure could help unlock greater demand for high-integrity removals.
The discussion will identify practical steps that companies, investors and policymakers can take to support procurement today while building a carbon removal market that contributes to climate goals, nature recovery and positive outcomes for people.
